A Patient’s Story: The Need for a Holistic Approach
A patient came to me after a year of struggling with poorly controlled depression despite cycling through medications. His treatments caused insomnia, weight gain, and low energy, while his untreated sleep apnea, diabetes, obesity, and thyroid disease worsened. His knee arthritis limited his movement, compounding his weight and mood challenges. And he was socially isolated because of these conditions.
Specialists focused on individual issues, but no one addressed the bigger picture. He felt overwhelmed by diet changes, disliked Japanese food, and didn’t know where to start.
